Los Angeles County Medicare Supplement Plan F G N Rates

2019 Medicare Supplement Rates in Los Angeles County. Plans G, F and N are currently the most popular.  Companies like; Anthem, Aetna, Blue Shield, Health Net and UnitedHealthcare.

Innovative plan F includes Vision and Hearing Coverage from companies: Anthem, Health Net and Blue Shield.

Los Angeles Medicare Supplement Rates, mainly with Anthem do not see the wide swinging ups and downs like in other parts of the Country.  Anthem Blue Cross is the carrier I think will continue to stay competitive in Los Angeles County, along with their Anthem Extras Dental & Vision packages, their Anthem Medicare Advantage HMO plans and Medicare Part D Rx plans all continuing to stay very popular over the coming years.

Los Angeles …  From Castaic over to Lancaster down to Pomona west towards Long Beach up to Santa Monica and all the way up north again to Castaic, and everything in between, Los Angeles with a County population nearing 10 million residents, 10% of which are age 65 and above, is and will continue to be a health Medicare Supplement market.

Do you live in Los Angeles County?  If you are already 65 and on Medicare, you are most likely in 1 of 3 categories; 1) you have Medicare only and have enrolled in a Medicare Part D Rx plan  2) You are 65 and are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO plan which includes your Part D Rx plan.  3) you have Medicare along with a Medicare Supplement and a Part D Rx plan.  All three scenarios can work, it just depends on what you are looking for, and what you want your program to pay for.

Los Angeles Rates …  Some of the Medicare Supplement companies in Los Angeles you will want to compare are:  Anthem, Blue Shield, Health Net, Mutual of Omaha, Aetna and UnitedHealthcare.  There are others although these seem to typically have the most competitive rates.

5 Tips for a Better Medicare Advantage Plan

5 TIPS to help you find a better Medicare Advantage plan for yourself, friend or family member. These tips are a good way the make sure you stay in a plan which works best for you and the type of care you need.

Keep in mind, Medicare Advantage plans are available in your county of residence.  Some counties have plenty to choose from, other counties don’t have any Advantage plans.

  • 2019 Medicare Advantage plans will be available for viewing here on October 1, 2018.

A few tips to keep in mind …

  1. HMO’s … When looking for a Medicare Advantage plan, you will notice most are HMO style plans.  The Premiums are typically very low, sometimes $0.  To compare the plans in your county, you can visit the Medicare website, enter your zip code and compare what is available in your area.
  2. Open-Enrollment … Each year, Medicare Advantage plans have an “Annual Open Enrollment” period which starts October 15 and ends December 7.  Any changes made during this time have an effective date of January 1.  This is an excellent time to compare new plans available for the next year and also to view what changes your current plan will have.
  3. Part D is included … With your Medicare Advantage plan, the Part D Rx coverage is typically included with the plan.  If you are on any specialty drugs or on several prescriptions, you will want to compare plans not only for the medical coverage but also how well the plan covers your prescriptions.  This is very important because of how expensive some medications cost.  Each Medicare Advantage plan can treat medications differently with how well it is covered.  Your total out of pocket costs are not only for medical coverage but also with prescription costs.  Choosing the wrong plan can be costly.
  4. Dis-enroll … If you do not want to keep your plan, and choose to dis-enroll mid year (outside of open enrollment), you can cancel your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare.  But you will not be able to enroll in a Part D Rx plan until the following January 1.  Remember when you cancel a Medicare Advantage plan the prescription coverage cancels also.
  5. Doctors … Make sure your doctor, specialists and hospitals you wish to have access to, are contracted with the plan you wish to enroll in.  Your primary care physician is going to organize all of your care.  If you need a specialist, the PCP will refer you to the appropriate specialist within the same medical group.  If you wish to see a doctor outside of your PCP’s medical group, this will be quite tricky since your PCP is the one who refers you.  If you wish to change your Primary Care Physician, you can do this anytime of the year, and the change to the new doctor will take place the first of the following month after the change is made.

Some Medicare Advantage plans can work pretty will, and then there are some that will not help much.  Be careful when comparing benefits along with doctor and hospital access.

Questions & Comments:

San Jose Medicare Advantage Plans

Anthem MediBlue Plus along with Blue Shield 65 Plus Medicare Advantage plans in San Jose (Santa Clara County) have several of the well known medicare advantage companies available to you.

Anthem, Blue Shield, Aetna, Health Net and UnitedHealthcare are five very popular medicare advantage HMO plans offering quality coverage and large networks of doctors and hospitals to choose from.  The choice of medicare advantage hmo companies may change slightly from year to year.

The Open-Enrollment starts October 15 and ends December 7. All changes and new enrollments take effect on January 1.  Call me on October 1, that is when I will have access to all Medicare Advantage companies and plans through out California.

Check the Anthem & Blue Shield Doctor Network

One of the major differences between all of these companies and plans is; who do you have access to?  What doctors and hospitals are contracted providers for your plan.  It is very important to verify the doctors you have access to before signing up for the new plan.

Many of the Medicare Advantage HMO plans are similar in design and pricing.  Although the doctor networks are typically what separate the plans.

If you have a doctor or hospital you do not wish to leave, the first part of your search is to find out what medicare advantage plans your doctor and hospital are contracted with.

When enrolling into a medicare advantage HMO plan in San Jose, you will need to choose a local Primary Care Physician (PCP).  This doctor is typically a General Practitioner (GP) or an Internist.  This is the doctor who will refer you to specialist and also the the hospital they are affiliated with.

Not all GP’s are PCP’s

Not all General Practitioners and Internist are Primary Care Physicians (PCP’s).  If not they cannot be your primary care physician.

If this is a new doctor, you can ask them who they will be referring you to, including which hospital they use for inpatient services.

You will notice most of the San Jose medicare advantage HMO plan benefits are quite similar.  There will be differences such as; copays, deductibles and annual out of pock maximums.  But for the most part they will look and feel quite similar.

Medicare Supplement

If you are looking for a medicare plan with more doctor and hospital choice, there is nothing better than a medicare supplement.  With a medicare supplement policy you can see any doctor, specialist or hospital across the U.S. who accepts medicare.  “Complete freedom of choice.” There are no networks to navigate.  If the doctor accepts medicare, you can see them, it’s that simple.

Medicare Supplement policies are “letter plans” such as Plan F and Plan G or Plan N.  All with a different level of coverage.  They only provide coverage for medical services, medicare supplement policies do not include the Medicare Part D Rx coverage.

You will need to enroll in a Medicare Part D Rx plan to help pay for your prescription costs.  There are typically 30 part D plan in Santa Clara County from year to year.  It’s best to run a comparison in order to see which plan will cover your medication the best.  The Medicare.gov website is a good place to run your comparison or you can contact me and I’ll be happy to send you the comparison for your medications.

No Cost Help … there is no charge for my services.  The insurance companies provide a fee for me to help with coverage options, enrollment and service.

Questions:

West Sacramento Medicare Supplement

West Sacramento in Yolo County Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans for medicare members.

All the big names are offering their medicare supplement plans throughout West Sacramento including but not limited to; Anthem, Blue Shield and Health Net.  All offering their “new to medicare discount,” which discounts their premiums anywhere from $15 to $25 for the first 12 months on the plan.

Example Rates:

Plan G

The medicare supplement plan G is quickly becoming one of the most looked into and enrolled in plan.  The rates are hard to beat even with the $183 annual deductible for outpatient services.

If you are new to medicare or currently have a medicare supplement and are comparing other companies.  Be sure to take a close look at Plan G.

Don’t forget about the Birthday Rule … this allows any medicare supplement member living in California the right to change companies on the month of their birthday to a similar plan or one with less benefits. This is a guaranteed enrollment regardless of your current or previous health status.  This is like an annual open enrollment for anyone on a medicare supplement in California.

Medicare Advantage HMO

If you are looking into Medicare Advantage plans, Yolo county has 7 HMO plans available.  The typical players; Health Net, Anthem, United Healthcare and Kaiser.  There may be a couple more, but an HMO is an HMO.  Seems like the only difference anymore is which company is contracted with your doctors and or hospital(s).

Medicare Part D

With the HMO plans, the Medicare Part D Rx coverage is included with the medical portion of the plan.  Make sure your medications are covered well before choosing a Medicare Advantage HMO.  You cannot mix-n-match Part D plans with HMO’s.

If you have a Medicare Supplement, you will need to enroll in a “stand alone” Part D plan.  Most counties including Yolo, have between 20 to 25 Part D plans to choose from.  Run a comparison to see which plan covers your medications the best.  It’s pretty easy to compare on the Medicare.gov website, or contact me and I’ll run the comparison for you, and send you the results.  I don’t sell any of the Part D plans but assist any of my customers who want a little help.

All medicare plans have different enrollment dates and options, call anytime and I’ll help you with your situation.
