Individual and family plan health insurance is usually less expensive than employer based health insurance.  because the individual and family plans go through an application process known as medical underwriting. Which means the insurance company will review your current and past health condition.  This “underwriting” allows a company to lower the premium based on health as opposed to a group policy which is guaranteed issue.

Do you currently have an employer group health plan in place?  Are you paying for your dependents?  Remember you can usually save substantial amounts of premium if you consider an individual policy for your spouse and or children as long as they are relatively healthy.  Also increase your benefits and lower your deductibles.

California individual and family plans cannot be cancelled or non-renewed because of claims history.  You can also take the policy with you from employer to employer.

A Medicare Supplement is also an area a small business owner can save on their group monthly premium.  If an employee turns 65 and applies for Medicare Part B coverage, they are now eligible for a Medicare Supplement or Medigap plan.  Depending on the supplement chosen, the insured will most likely have more comprehensive coverage, and the employer will be paying a much lower premium.  Some Medicare Supplement insurance companies offer List Billing, which allows for a single bill if there are multiple Medicare Supplement members in the same company.
