Blue Shield Medicare Supplement

3 February 2010 No Comment

blueshieldca_l1Blue Shield of California offers 5 Medicare Supplement plans: A, C, D, F and K for Californians with Medicare Part A and Part B.  One of these plans could very well be the right plan for you.  And they are from a company who has been providing health care coverage for over 65 years.  Blue Shield Medicare Supplement plans offer the freedom to choose any doctor, specialist or hospital, or any other provider that accepts Medicare.  In other words you are not limited to a network!

Our two most comprehensive and popular Blue Shield Medicare Supplement plans; Plan D and Plan F, pay the Medicare Part A deductible of $1,156 and the 20% coinsurance after the Part B deductible of $140.  Also covered are the Skilled Nursing Facility copayment and the foreign travel emergency care.  In fact no other standardized Medicare Supplement plan offered in California offers more complete protection for your uncovered Part B expenses than Plan F.

Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plan D covers:

  • Your Part A deductible ($1,156 each 60 day benefit period) and coinsurance.
  • The cost of 365 extra days of hospital care during your lifetime after Medicare coverage ends.
  • Your Part B coinsurance and the cost of the first three pints of blood.
  • Skilled Nursing Facility copayment.application1
  • Foreign Travel emergency care.
  • Important benefits for at-home care after a hospital stay in addition to the basic benefits.

Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plan F covers:

  • Your Part A deductible ($1,156 each benefit period) and coinsurance.
  • The cost of 365 extra days of hospital care during your lifetime after Medicare coverage ends.
  • Your Part B coinsurance and the cost of the first three pints of blood.
  • Skilled Nursing Facility copayment.
  • Foreign Travel emergency care.
  • $162 Part B Medicare deductible.
  • Part B doctor charges that are in excess of Medicare-approved amounts.

If you are new to Medicare, plans D and F offer comprehensive coverage for the person looking for an easy to use plan with very little out of pocket expenses when seeing a physician or hospital.   To apply simply print the enrollment application and fax it to me with a copy of your Medicare card (Red, White and Blue card).  I’ll handle the rest for a seamless application process.

California also offers a terrific “Guaranteed Issue” advantage.  Each year during the annual open enrollment period, which is on the month of your birthday a Medicare Supplement member can switch to a different company plan with same or less benefits without having to be approved medically.  So if you have a Medicare Supplement Plan F with another company, during the month of your birthday, you can choose any company plan F which is available in California.  This allows you freedom to choose companies with lower premiums regardless of your current health.

Blue Shield also offers their new members a $20 discount if you are new to Medicare Part B (within 6 month of the first date you are enrolled in Part B), and this discount is for the first 12 months of you being a member of a Blue Shield Medicare Supplement plan.

An alternative to a Medicare Supplement plan is a Medicare Advantage plan.  One of the most popular California Medicare Advantage plans is the Anthem Medicare Preferred PPO Plan.  It is a $0 premium plan (in most areas) which includes the Medicare Part D Rx plan.
