Anthem Blue Cross Medicare Supplement – 2012

25 August 2010 2 Comments

What’s new with Anthem Blue Cross Medicare Supplement plans in 2012?

Recent laws have brought many changes to Medicare Supplement insurance policies.  these changes give you choices in health care coverage to fill gaps in services that original Medicare doesn’t cover.

  • Basic Benefits – Starting with policies effective on or after June 1, 2010, Hospice Part A coinsurance (outpatient prescription drug and inpatient respite care coinsurance) will be covered as a basic benefit.  Plan K will cover 50%, and Plan L will cover 75% of these costs.
  • Part B Coinsurance- Plans K, L and N will require you to pay a portion of Part B coinsurance and copayments, which may result in lower premiums for these plans.  All other Medicare Supplement policies pay Part B coinsurance or copayments at 100%
  • New Plans Offered – Plans M and N are new Medicare Supplement plans.
  • Plans D and G – Plans D and G bought on or after June 1, 2010 have different benefits than D or G plans bought before June 1, 2010.  But, if you bought Plan D or G before June 1, 2010 you can keep that plan and your benefits will not change.
  • Plans No Longer for Sale – Plans E, H, I and J are no longer be sold as of May 31, 2010.  But, if you already have Plan E, H, I or J before June 1, 2010 you can keep the plan with no changes.

*If a check-mark appears in a column of this chart, the Medicare Supplement plan covers 100% of the described benefit.  If a column lists a percentage, the policy covers that percentage of the described benefit.  If a column is blank, the plan does not cover that benefit.

Anthem Blue Cross Medicare Supplement policies are sold through licensed insurance agents, sponsoring groups or through the mail by private insurance companies.  You only need one policy, and it is illegal for an insurer to sell you more than one.

By Law, companies can only offer 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans, known as plans A-N.  (These include plans; A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M and N.  Plans E, H, I and J were dropped due to changes in federal law effective June 1, 2010).  Standardized plans have the same benefits, regardless of which company sells them.  This makes it easy for you to compare premiums for the same lettered policy, quickly and easily.

You can transfer to one of these new “Modernized” plans at anytime.  The rates will most likely be lower in the long run.

Please feel free to call or email anytime for more information.  I can also help you transfer to one of the new Medigap plans.
