2012 California Freedom Blue

17 January 2010 10 Comments

2012 California Anthem Freedom Blue Plan … Is now called Anthem Medicare Preferred Standard PPO.

The New Anthem Medicare Preferred PPO plan is available in the following California Counties:

Alameda, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Stanislaus and Ventura.

The Anthem Medicare Preferred Standard PPO is a Medicare Advantage plan which includes the Medicare Part D Rx coverage at no additional cost.  The Plan is available to anyone living in California who has both Medicare parts A and B and resides int the above listed Counties.  Typically you can enroll every year during the Medicare Advantage “Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) which runs from October 15th through December 7th.  Or if you are new to Medicare Part B you have three months from the Part B date of coverage to enroll in the California Freedom Blue plan.

What if I have been dropped from a Medicare Advantage plan?

Some insurance companies that offer Medicare Advantage plans have decided to drop, or discontinue certain plans for the 2012 year.  This means that many Medicare beneficiaries that are currently enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans will need to change their plan by enrolling in a new Medicare plan during the open enrollment period.  You may enroll in another plan with that same company or choose a plan from one of the other companies in your area.  If your plan has been dropped, Medicare gives you additional time to select a new Medicare plan.  You can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Supplement plan from October 15th through December 31st.

The California Anthem Medicare Preferred Standard PPO plan offers the best of both worlds.  Quality coverage with no monthly or annual premium.  It’s hard to beat.  The coverage allows you to see any physician in the United States, although if you see an Anthem Blue Cross PPO doctor, specialist or hospital you copays will be less.  The Anthem Medicare Preferred PPO Plan has an “Out-of-Pocket-Maximum” of $3,400 which means if you combine all of your copays, percentages and deductibles (out of pocket amounts) throughout the year and your total reaches $3,400, from that point on your plan will cover you 100% of qualified medical expenses for the remainder of the year.  So if you have major medical and or hospital expenses the most you will have to pay in any given year is $3,400.  That amount is the same even if you see a physician, specialist or hospital anywhere in the United States, in the Anthem Blue Cross of California network or outside the network.

PPO – No doctor referral needed

The California Freedom Blue plans are PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans which allow you to see any participating provider in California.  You do NOT need a referral to see a specialist or a different doctor.  Simply make an appointment and go, it’s that simple.  If you want to see a physician in a different part of California, because you have heard they are the best at treating a certain condition, make the appointment.  With A PPO style plan you are not pigeonholed with having to work through your HMO primary care physician or “Gatekeeper.”  The California Freedom Blue plans offer the freedom to go where you want, and that can make a big difference in the quality of your care.

Simple to use and easy to understand

With A California Freedom Blue Plan from Anthem Blue Cross, you get combined medical and drug coverage, all for the same plan, with one health plan card.  But more than that, your new California Freedom Blue plan will be easy to use with virtually no paperwork.

    John,
Your website is outstanding and I only wish you covered the san deigo county area. I am definitely interested in transferring from secure horizon medicare supplement to a ppo where i choose my own doctor, and blue cross ppo sounds very reasonable and just what i am looking for. i will attend a seminar next week in our area; however, our representation does not think she’ll have time to send me any information that i can review before going to her seminar, which is too bad because how can i formulate questions before doing research. you website is by far comprehensive amd very informative. i printed out your application form. only wish i could fill it out online rather than printing it out and having to mail it.

    Questions:
I need to know the network and the recommended doctors within the network.
i am interested in Scripps Green Hospital located in La Jolla.
John, if there’s anyway you can help, i would be most appreciative.

Great website. You’re the best. Was unable to access the info you sent me re Multag. Just couldn’t access the websites. I’ve called Freedom Blue directly, but the personnel I talked to were unable to obtain this information. Want to know if Multaq is Tier 3 drug as its very expensive.

  • john said:

Hello Em, Multaq is not a covered prescription with the Anthem Freedom Blue plan. Although if the drug is mandatory from your doctor, you can request that Anthem add the drug to their formulary list. This is a pretty easy and common process.

Anthem could not tell me which tier Multaq would be placed in.

    Thanks;

    Hi John.
Thank you for the excellent presentation.
Question: most of the doctors and hospitals charge much much more, than allowed by medicare.Who will be responsible for the difference in charge and covered by insurance. Now when I have HMO it just amuses me the difference in charges and payment, but what will happen when I switch to PPO?
    Thank you for your response
    Tina

  • john (author) said:

Hi Tina, if on an HMO or PPO, as long as you stay within the doctor and hospital network, all providers within the network are under contract and can only charge the negotiated discounted fees. So either way the provider can only charge what they are contractually allowed to.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have further questions.

    Thanks … John

I have the Anthem Freedom Blue Plan and live in Temecula in Riverside County but just about on the San Diego County border. Why is the new plan free in San Diego County but $106 per month in Temecula? I am looking for a PPO with no extra monthly fee. The Doctors I use only take PPO plans as it seems so do most Dr’s.
    Would appreciate a response.
    Margot

  • john (author) said:

Hi Margo, I wish I had a good answer for you. The only info I have is Riverside County as a whole has higher doctor and hospital charges than San Diego and Los Angeles counties. In Riverside county for 2012 there are 26 available Medicare Advantage plan and 25 are HMO’s.

Your options are to go with the Anthem PPO, or move to Medicare and or a Medicare Supplement.

Margo, please feel free to call anytime with questions.

    Thanks .. John Conner
